A study of literature that may include pre-Columbian indigenous narratives, texts of encounter and colonization, settlement and national identity, and regional schism leading up to the US Civil War. A variety of literature including poetry, fiction, plays, and popular prose forms will be considered and be inclusive of diverse racial, ethnic, and gendered perspectives.
