What is music—sound waves? live performances? streaming audio code? a conductor’s score? What distinguishes music from noise? Is music something uniquely human? This course explores how a historically and geographically diverse array of intellectual traditions have grappled with such questions, enlisting the insights of philosophers, composers and Indigenous thinkers to sound out the ethical, conceptual and political issues music raises.
